Types of Digital X-rays

Digital X-rays are recorded through three methods, direct method, indirect method, and semi-indirect method. Direct method of imaging involves placing sensor hardware inside the mouth to record the images. In the indirect method, an x-ray film scanner is used to view traditional dental x-rays as digital images. The semi-indirect method uses both the sensor hardware and scanner to convert x-ray film into digital imaging. Digital x-rays identify new cavities, tooth decay, and other misalignments. Digital x-ray imaging is of two types. Intraoral allows you to view and examine the oral structure inside the mouth. Extraoral x-rays are mainly focused on detecting the problems in the jaw and skull.

Intraoral X-rays

There are various types of Intraoral x-rays:

·         Bite-wing x-rays require the patient to bite down on a piece of plastic with the x-ray film to view your whole mouth including the upper and lower teeth. This type of x-ray is used to detect decayed teeth, changes in the bone density and also in determining the proper fit of a crown.

·         Periapical Type shows a specific portion of the oral cavity exposed to x-ray radiation, which penetrate the complete tooth structure from root, root tips, to the crown. This type of x-ray is used to detect abscess formation in and around the bone, or any other abnormalities surrounding the teeth, and to detect gum diseases.

Extraoral X-rays

There are various types of Extraoral x-rays:

·         Panoramic type of X rays shows the complete details of the oral cavity, both upper and lower arches.

·         Multi-slice computed tomography (MCT) can clearly view only a particular section of the mouth while blurring the other parts.

There are other types extraoral x-rays such as:

·         Cephalometric projections show the entire head and jaw profile of the patient

·         Sialography gland imaging shows salivary glands and

·         Cone beam computerized tomography produces 3D images of the interior structures which are useful for diagnosis of tumor, infection and facial structures.
